Foundation Golf Outing

Jeff Cooper C.A.R.E.’s largest fundraising event of the year is the Annual Golf Tournament. The tournament was concepted by Jeff’s aunt and uncle, Walter & Cheryl Ford, as a means to raise funds to focus on research and reach out to the community about cardiomyopathy.

Walter and Cheryl write:
The Jeff Cooper C.A.R.E. Foundation was founded in 2003 after the sudden passing of our “healthy” 27-year old nephew, Jeffrey Cooper. To die that young goes against life’s natural order. It just isn’t supposed to happen, yet it does. Even though Jeff experienced multiple signs of the heart disease cardiomyopathy, his condition went undiagnosed primarily because of his age and physique. Greater awareness and education may have saved his life, but since that is no longer possible, Jeff’s family and friends have joined together to prevent other families from experiencing this loss.

The event is held each October at Fox Hopyard Golf Club in East Haddam, CT, a beautiful course for passionate golfers and beginners alike. Golfers from all over the east coast attend. There is a scramble format with a 100 player limit. The donation includes greens fees, cart, range balls, lunch cocktail reception, contest prizes and entry to silent auction.

The proceeds from this event enable the foundation to:
• Continue its support of cardiomyopathy research conducted at Johns Hopkins Medical Institute.
• Maintain and upgrade existing AEDs in local school systems to accommodate pediatric use.

The generosity of the Golf Tournament attendees provides the foundation with much needed resources to improve the diagnosis and treatment of a disease that so often affects young people.
